Kinaway Communications and Media Training Program

The Kinaway Communication and Media Training Program provides Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander business people with the skills and tools to interact professionally with journalists from traditional media, television, newspaper and radio.

Kinaway Chamber of Commerce invites Victorian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander business owners to apply to participate in the Communications and Media Training – Workshop Program commencing in May 2022.

The core component of the program is are media training workshops that provide participants access to a range of tools and resources to meet the objectives below in the context of media relations.

Kinaway Chamber of Commerce seeks to:

  • Increase the visibility of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander owned businesses
  • Improve the quality of business marketing
  • Improve the skills of business owners

This program is funded through the Business Chamber and Trader Groups Program through the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR).

The Communication and Media Training – Workshop Program

The Communication and Media Training Program consists of  3 x 3.5 hour in-person workshops facilitated by a boutique media services company in Collingwood.

Participants can expect to gain confidence in approaching and engaging with media, improve their messaging and develop a clear media plan for interactions with all media platforms. The workshops will include pitching stories, media interview practices, media training manuals and media kit templates. Workshop participants will also be eligible for ongoing support for a further 12 months.

To further enhance the media relations skills of Kinaways members, the program will also include online webinars covering “How to write a media release” and “Developing a media kit”.

The selection process is as follows:

  • Business will be selected by a panel of key stakeholders
  • Successful applicants will be notified of the outcome by 24th May 2022
  • Up to 15 participants will be selected to attend the workshops
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete a survey prior to participating and on completion of the workshop
  • Workshop participants agree to be photographed and these images being shared with DJPR for reporting and outcome purposes
  • Applications will be required to report on outcomes of the publicity activities as part of the project
