The City of Melbourne have recently appointed Atticusnow and Karabena Consulting to help them develop an Indigenous Economic Development Strategy for the city, incorporating consideration of an Indigenous Business Hub.

While the City has been heavily impacted by COVID-19, it is likely to spring back strongly over the next year or two and will continue to be the largest employment zone as well as a major centre for education, innovation and entrepreneurship. Given the scale and centrality of the city, it is critical that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have effective access to these employment and enterprise opportunities if economic inclusion is to be improved. Indigenous people and businesses can also contribute unique elements in building a stronger and more sustainable city economy.

Karabena Consulting, led by Professor Kerry Arabena, are seeking input from Kinaway members on their experiences (or lack thereof) in dealing with the City of Melbourne, whether that be in operating within, providing services to, or receiving support from the City of Melbourne, or having no interaction at all. Understanding your experiences, your needs, and what opportunities you think there may be for the City of Melbourne to better support and engage Indigenous businesses will be critical to informing the recommendations put to the city council.

Survey respondents will go into the draw to win a 7th generation 32GB iPad in recognition of their time and contributions. The survey can be accessed here, and will close at 5pm (AEST) Friday, 28 May 2021.

In addition to the survey, Karabena Consulting will be looking to invite a number of business owners to participate in a focus group at the new Kinaway offices in Richmond, on the morning of 7 June 2021.

If you are interested in participating in the focus group, please complete the expression of interest form by 5pm (AEST) Friday, 28 May 2021.

If you are selected to participate in the focus group, you will be sent a participant information sheet and consent form to read and complete prior to the date. Sitting fees will be available to those that attend in recognition of their time and contributions.
